We did make it to Oregon, and we are alive (barely). I have been dreading having to write this post because I will have to relive the memories of our flight out to Oregon. I do want to write this down in the off chance that I ever get the crazy idea of flying again with two kids across country by myself.
We ended up having to wake the kids up at around 4:00 am to get to the airport on time. I would have thought the kids would have slept on the hour drive to the airport but no luck. The day before we left I was talking to Kirsten about being nervous about the whole experience, she told me that her sister travels a lot and was able to have her husband get a special pass to let him go through security and walk them to the gate. Low and behold they actually gave Jeff one of the passes. This was a huge miracle to have Jeff be able to help us get even that much further.
Once on the plane we settled into our seats, and I was hoping that no one would want to sit next to us (I mean come on, one woman with two kids) unfortunately ever seat on the airplane was full. Once we took off Bella fell asleep five minutes after take off. Logan lasted about fifteen minutes longer, and then he was out too. I was so proud and tickled with what an amazing traveling mother I was. I was telling myself that this flying stuff was a piece of cake.
Well the kids only ended up sleeping for about an hour. It was a 4 hour and 45 minute flight. I made the rookie mistake and started pulling out all my tricks and food to keep them entertained. The first flight they actually did really well on. By the end they were a little cranky but not bad for being confined and having a lack of sleep.
Now when we booked our flight it said that we were going to make stops along the way. I was a little confused when we landed in Phoenix and they came over the intercom saying that we needed to stay on the plane. I guess this wouldn't have been bad except for the fact that we also had to stop in Los Angelas, Oakland, and finally Portland.
TEN, TEN, TEN hours stuck on a plane. It was insane!!! Logan never slept any more, and Bella slept for maybe twenty more minutes. The last couple of flights Logan would scream when we had to buckle his seat belt during take off and landing. By the end of the flight I was one of those mother's where my children were screaming and I just looked at them, and said I have nothing I can do to help you.
What I learned from this experience is that if anyone on the west coast would like to see us, our door is always open in Maryland. At least the kids have a month to recover before we stick them back on an airplane.
These are the only pictures I have from our ordeal. I think my subconscious was trying to tell me that I didn't want much evidence to remember the experience.
I'll try and post some more picture and stories soon. I'm a little behind already on documenting our trip. I think it's taken me awhile to recover from our flight(s).

Awww Shauna I am soooo sorry! We flew to Colorado once when Tyler had a fever and that was the WORST experience ever. What I have learned is always fly direct with no stops or plane changes if possible and provide TV. Hopefully once you decide to fly again (in 30 or 40 years) they will be better behaved. I dunno though, some 30 and 40 year olds are pretty cranky too. I can't wait to see pictures of the FUN part of the trip!
Will Logan use head phones? If so I have a little gift for you, that you can borrow for the return flight, and then just mail back to me when you get around to it.... trust me, it is a god send on long trips.
I am so so sorry. But now that you're here, you'll have a great holiday and it will all be a bad dream by the time you go home!
I have had both good and bad experiences flying with my kids. I can completely relate to the prayer that noone sit next to you. Once, I had a baby asleep in a carseat next to the window (mid-flight) when the flight attendant came up to me and said that since that was the last seat left on the plane, I would need to wake her up and stow my carseat so that another passenger who was sitting next to a large woman could be more comfortable. I was steaming mad!
The good news is that you are HERE!! Can we get together sometime soon. We leave on the 17th or 18th of this month. Sorry we will miss the sealing:(
Look at you blogging away from home!! Oh, I feel for you! That sounds like such a nightmare! How stressfull all by yourself! Did you ever break down and cry? I would've!!
WHOA look at you, on vacation and still blogging? Impressive! I was excited to hear about your story but then I got a preview because I ran into Jeff and he already told me. :) I can't believe they made you SIT ON THE PLANE! I have never even heard of that! 10 hrs.? You have got to be kidding. After that, I wouldn't even feel bad about my screaming kids. I would glare at the flight crew like, "You asked for this." Kate had one of those meltdowns at the baggage claim where I actually tried to pretend I didn't know her. At that point, what can you do but just stare.
oh oh oh, i am SO sorry! i was reading this, cringing for you... i know you were really worried about the flight. well, now you have an awful plane story like we all do, and you will never do it again!!! honestly, it really is torture...
you are missed here! i talked to jeff on sunday. i am looking forward to a LONG chat when you get home :o) give the kids a squeeze from my boys!
