Harpers Ferry

This past Monday Jeff was off of work for Columbus Day (yeah, we like the fact that he works for the Feds), so we decided to take a road trip over to Harpers Ferry in West Virginia. I love the fact that we were able to drive through three different states all in one hour.

Our good buddies the Lundell's came with us and made the trip extra fun. Here is a picture of all of us in front of the junction of the Potomac River and the Shenandoah River. This is also the spot where Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia all meet.
Logan and Bella did really well on the ride to West Virginia.
Bella is such a ham. Yep, that's a piece of ceral stuck to the side of her face.
Once we got there we had to park and take a shuttle bus to the town. Logan was SUPER excited to be able to ride the bus for the first time.
The town of Harpers Ferry was amazing. It was like walking back into the 1800's. I'm always trying to think of interesting (cheap), fun (free) things that we can do on weekends. When I was rereading Laura's blog and I found her post about Harpers Ferry, and fell in love with the town. I was not disappointed, it is an incredible town.
Harpers Ferry is where John Brown, the abolitionist, started the movement to end slavery. The town has re-enactments of the events that took place back in the 1800's.
Harpers Ferry is also the place where Lewis and Clark started their expedition to the West. They ended their trek in Oregon. Cool huh!
Harpers Ferry's other claim to fame is the ending spot of Jeff's infamous 50-mile hike that he did this summer with his boy scout troop. He wanted to get a picture by these stairs where the Appalacation trial cuts through the town.

We did a lot of this during the day. Lucky for us, the night before we left I reread Laura's post about when she went, and we decided to forego our strollers. I'm glad we did because their were A LOT of stairs in this town. It made me grateful for our flat apartment.
Sometimes I find it quite interesting how even though our kids are adopted, I get these glimpses of how much they look like us. This picture is one of those times. I love how Jeff and Bella have the same expression. She is her daddy's little girl.
Can you believe these stairs behind Logan. They were leading up to the town's church. I have no idea how women did it in those days.
These rock walls also amazed me. They were throughout the whole town. They were so beautiful with the bright fall leaves popping around them.

I think it was quite a successful day, because even at the end we still had two smiling kiddos. Time with family, friends, and smiles equals a great day. For more fun pictures of our day check out Krista's blog here.

THE END

I had to include this video for my brother. While we were there we saw a couple of trains go by, and Logan's excitement was beyond words. He doesn't say the word train, he just calls the trains "Thomas" (for the cartoon character). He is one funny little boy.

I love this town! Glad you didn't take a stroller because it was hard to carry my beast around. :)
